When Two Worlds Collide: Social Media Marketing & SEO

From Hubspot’s marketing blog, I read an excellent article on social media.

As an e-commerce business, what do these developments mean for you?  In short, the worlds of social media and search have collided. In summary:

1. Search traffic to social media sites will make Twitter and Facebook even more ubiquitous. Expect social media to be as indispensable as the phone. It already is for many. With a flood of traffic from search engines, it’ll be impossible for web users to avoid social networks.

2. Search will eventually become personalized to each user based on their social media activity and friends’ activities. All of the basics of SEO will still be important, but your social media presence will be a critical part of securing your search traffic.

Twitter was purported to be in talks to license their full feed of Tweets to Google and Bing for real time display of all of Tweets in their search engine result pages.

Well, that has happened. Only, it’s even a bigger deal than that. Facebook has joined the party and made it a foursome.

Here’s the news:

  • Bing licenses Twitter feeds and launches Twitter search. (Microsoft)
  • Bing licenses Facebook feeds. (ReadWriteWeb)
  • Google launches Twitter search. (Google)
  • Twitter Founder  Ev Williams announcements of the Google Deal and Bing Deals. (Twitter)
  • Google launches social search in labs.  (ReadWriteWeb)

Social media will most likely become just as important as content creation and inbound links for priming the SEO pump. Search Engine Optimization is not rocket science

I’ve been in the ‘biz’ for over a decade now. I’ve experienced the internet revolution, from the text based usenets and ‘fetch’ program to being one of the first users of Mozilla at the Univeristy of Colorado at Boulder. (wow! windows-based surfing the internet)

Working for DoubleClick, who served up the first banner ad on dilbert.com back in 1996, I experienced the world of online marketing, rode the wave of the e-commerce revolution as businesses flocked to “retail-ize” the world wide web much to the chagrin of the intellectuals, took the punches and the shock wave of the McCarthy-istic lawsuits which blamed cookies for invading consumer’s homes and privacy, reached out to consumers with the advent of email marketing, poked, prodded, probed and taught online retailers how to understand the new creature – the multi-channel consumer – using analytics and metrics.

Oh how I love the internet and especially, marketing on the internet. I love how it’s connected users around the world, empowered individuals to become authors, publishers and entrepreneurs. Ecommerce, online marketing, search engine optimization, web 2.0 has leveled the playing field for every individual to publish, sell and network, regardless of age, ability, talent or resources.

The next frontier of video, podcasting, social networking and consumer generated media has created an internet by the people and for the people.
