SEO is not always about the #1 spot: Why Market Share is the Golden Key

Any good marketer knows that magic word known as: market share. Market share, according to Wikipedia is defined as, “the percentage or proportion of the total available market or market segment that is being serviced by a company.”   What would you do to achieve 40% market share of your business niche? In the world online real estate (a.k.a. first page organic SERP results), market share relates to dominating the first page of any given Search Engine Results Page (SERP).  By dominating this prime real estate space with results that all point back to your company, then you have achieved the prized SEO, “Page Domination”.

While being #1 is pretty awesome, would you rather pour all of your resources so that you can have 1/10th of the market share of a search engine result or would you rather achieve 4 results on that first page with those same resources and efforts? 10% or 40% market share? Don’t answer, it’s pretty obvious.

I love having 4 to 5 organic results pointing back to my website for my top keywords.  Not to say I don’t strive for #1, but until I’m there, I’m taking positions 3, 5 7 & 9 if I have to. And what does that get me? 40% of that keyword’s market share. Consumers looking for my services coming to me, through direct traffic, referral traffic and social media route.  In the world of SEO, page domination is a far better indication of successful, broad range search engine optimization, than just about anything else.

If you put all your eggs in one basket – i.e. all your money & effort on being #1 on one keyword, that may suffice. But what will truly garner more consumer traffic to your business is page domination. Online consumers are getting savvy. They are the same ones that realized that “AAArdvark Plumbing” was not necessarily the best business to unclog their kitchen sink, but just the one that manipulated the alphabetical listings of the phone book.

Having multiple results back to your site on the first page, in addition to first result listing, not only provides you with consumer traffic right to your online front door, but having results from multiple sources provides validation. Something that online consumers are now seeking when looking for your business.
