Idaho SEO Expert blog: Don’t “make your links appear natural” just make them naturally

I think it absurd every time I get one of those poorly worded ESL emails from the purported SEO service attempting to hawk “natural looking” links. If  you are engaging in real online marketing, engaging in social media, finding linking opportunities from real synergistic businesses, then there is absolutely no reason to buy anyone’s service that purports to “create natural looking links”.  These are just link farms in SEO’s clothing (from the adage “Wolf in Sheep’s clothing”) and bound to get you little more than downgraded or banned in search engines and out a few hundred or thousand wasted dollars.

Today’s world of social media allows businesses more opportunity than ever to connect to and engage their target audience, buyers and prospects, in a shared dialogue. No longer does a business have to wait for a consumer to walk through the front doors of a store front, brick & mortar or online store, to engage visitors. This is such an exciting time as it’s made marketing for small businesses so much more efficient and cost-effective.

So, if you are using social media, publishing and engaging your audience, working with your SEO to follow a sound online marketing strategy, those links will come naturally and even more importantly, you will have found your target audience; not manipulated your way to the top of a SERP.

Using the best possible, objective search engine optimization and online marketing strategy for your business is the only answer for good marketing. And that’s what I’m here for. To get the most of your internet presence, visit Idaho-SEO Expert.

SEO is not always about the #1 spot: Why Market Share is the Golden Key

Any good marketer knows that magic word known as: market share. Market share, according to Wikipedia is defined as, “the percentage or proportion of the total available market or market segment that is being serviced by a company.”   What would you do to achieve 40% market share of your business niche? In the world online real estate (a.k.a. first page organic SERP results), market share relates to dominating the first page of any given Search Engine Results Page (SERP).  By dominating this prime real estate space with results that all point back to your company, then you have achieved the prized SEO, “Page Domination”.

While being #1 is pretty awesome, would you rather pour all of your resources so that you can have 1/10th of the market share of a search engine result or would you rather achieve 4 results on that first page with those same resources and efforts? 10% or 40% market share? Don’t answer, it’s pretty obvious.

I love having 4 to 5 organic results pointing back to my website for my top keywords.  Not to say I don’t strive for #1, but until I’m there, I’m taking positions 3, 5 7 & 9 if I have to. And what does that get me? 40% of that keyword’s market share. Consumers looking for my services coming to me, through direct traffic, referral traffic and social media route.  In the world of SEO, page domination is a far better indication of successful, broad range search engine optimization, than just about anything else.

If you put all your eggs in one basket – i.e. all your money & effort on being #1 on one keyword, that may suffice. But what will truly garner more consumer traffic to your business is page domination. Online consumers are getting savvy. They are the same ones that realized that “AAArdvark Plumbing” was not necessarily the best business to unclog their kitchen sink, but just the one that manipulated the alphabetical listings of the phone book.

Having multiple results back to your site on the first page, in addition to first result listing, not only provides you with consumer traffic right to your online front door, but having results from multiple sources provides validation. Something that online consumers are now seeking when looking for your business.

Using the best possible, objective search engine optimization and online marketing strategy for your business is the only answer for good marketing. And that’s what I’m here for. To get the most of your internet presence, visit Idaho-SEO.

Don’t Feel Obligated

I like this quote from Google, it really emphasizes the need for good SEO services, not those trying to manipulate the industry for exhorbitant fees.

“Don’t feel obligated to purchase a search engine optimization service. Some companies claim to “guarantee” high ranking for your site in Google’s search results. While legitimate consulting firms can improve your site’s flow and content, others employ deceptive tactics in an attempt to fool search engines. Be careful; if your domain is affiliated with one of these deceptive services, it could be banned from the Google index.”

That’s why calling on a professional SEO to help develop your online strategic marketing plan is the sound choice. Researching target markets, consumer groups, evaluating the effort for your business (meaning how are you going to get business from any given effort) against the return on that effort and measuring the benchmarks for success are all what professional SEOs could provide to you for social media marketing, which leaves you to the most important business – that of running your business.

Think Facebook is for kids and Twitter is a bunch of noise? Think again.

In my last post, I quoted that social media will most likely become just as important as content creation and inbound links for priming the SEO pump.

While not necessarily a statistically significant sample, this Cone Media survey confirms that of the online users sampled, social media is the emerging new trend in marketing dialogue.  Read the article on SEO social media: Facebook and Twitter at Idaho SEO blog.

When Two Worlds Collide: Social Media Marketing & SEO

From Hubspot’s marketing blog, I read an excellent article on social media.

As an e-commerce business, what do these developments mean for you?  In short, the worlds of social media and search have collided. In summary:

1. Search traffic to social media sites will make Twitter and Facebook even more ubiquitous. Expect social media to be as indispensable as the phone. It already is for many. With a flood of traffic from search engines, it’ll be impossible for web users to avoid social networks.

2. Search will eventually become personalized to each user based on their social media activity and friends’ activities. All of the basics of SEO will still be important, but your social media presence will be a critical part of securing your search traffic.

Twitter was purported to be in talks to license their full feed of Tweets to Google and Bing for real time display of all of Tweets in their search engine result pages.

Well, that has happened. Only, it’s even a bigger deal than that. Facebook has joined the party and made it a foursome.

Here’s the news:

  • Bing licenses Twitter feeds and launches Twitter search. (Microsoft)
  • Bing licenses Facebook feeds. (ReadWriteWeb)
  • Google launches Twitter search. (Google)
  • Twitter Founder  Ev Williams announcements of the Google Deal and Bing Deals. (Twitter)
  • Google launches social search in labs.  (ReadWriteWeb)

Social media will most likely become just as important as content creation and inbound links for priming the SEO pump. Search Engine Optimization is not rocket science

I’ve been in the ‘biz’ for over a decade now. I’ve experienced the internet revolution, from the text based usenets and ‘fetch’ program to being one of the first users of Mozilla at the Univeristy of Colorado at Boulder. (wow! windows-based surfing the internet)

Working for DoubleClick, who served up the first banner ad on dilbert.com back in 1996, I experienced the world of online marketing, rode the wave of the e-commerce revolution as businesses flocked to “retail-ize” the world wide web much to the chagrin of the intellectuals, took the punches and the shock wave of the McCarthy-istic lawsuits which blamed cookies for invading consumer’s homes and privacy, reached out to consumers with the advent of email marketing, poked, prodded, probed and taught online retailers how to understand the new creature – the multi-channel consumer – using analytics and metrics.

Oh how I love the internet and especially, marketing on the internet. I love how it’s connected users around the world, empowered individuals to become authors, publishers and entrepreneurs. Ecommerce, online marketing, search engine optimization, web 2.0 has leveled the playing field for every individual to publish, sell and network, regardless of age, ability, talent or resources.

The next frontier of video, podcasting, social networking and consumer generated media has created an internet by the people and for the people.
